Somali is written in the Latin alphabet adopted in 1972, with the letter combinations dh, kh and sh, double letters for long vowels, and the apostrophe for the glottal stop, as in ba’an. A font is listed here when it holds every letter and draws these sequences cleanly.

The Osmanya script is a separate writing system and is not part of this collection.

How these fonts are checked

Every claim on this page comes from the released font files, tested with the same shaping engine browsers use and with no fallback font allowed to fill a gap. Three things are tracked separately:

  • Characters checked: every required letter in capitals and small letters, every accent and the punctuation of everyday text is in every file.
  • Rendering checked: letters typed as one character and as a letter plus combining accent look the same; accents sit on their letters without touching, colliding or being cut off; i and j lose their dot under an accent.
  • Language review: a fluent speaker has read this font in this language and confirmed it. Until then a font shows “Language review pending”.

Requirements: Somali profile so-Latn 1.1.0 (Somali Latin orthography (1972)). Checker 1.0.0, last run November 1, 2026.
